Remembering History: On May 1,1865...Our Ancestors-African-Americans Established "Memorial Day," Celebrations
Now You Know: The first memorial day was celebrated by former slaves and freemen after the American Civil War; many of these Union soldiers volunteered for service without equal; or no pay at all; or benefits; but served by faith in a future where their children; and children-children would enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This annual celebration requires all hands to collectively celebrate the cost of blood, bullets, ballots; and the bravery of our ancestors with our family, friends, and fellow veterans. The first Memorial Day was celebrated on May 1, 1865, by our African-American ancestors.
